“Nurturance is a worthy life endeavor.”

Janine Benyus is the natural sciences writer and innovation consultant best known as the author of Biomimicry. For the positive impact of her sustainable design work - and her role teaching others how to do the same - Time Magazine named her Hero for the Planet and BusinessWeek named her one of the World’s Most Influential Designers.

Janine co-founded the world’s first bio-inspired consultancy to bring nature’s sustainable designs to clients around the globe, and launched the Biomimicry Institute and Biomimicry Guild. Biomimicry is a discipline that seeks sustainable solutions by emulating nature's designs and processes.

Janine’s favorite role is Biologist-At-The-Design-Table. She also teaches interpretive writing, lectures at the University of Montana, and works toward restoring and protecting wild lands. She has received widespread recognition such as the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Mind Award, Rachel Carson Environmental Ethics Award, and the Champion of the Earth in Science & Innovation from the UNEP.

Janine transports us with her sense of wonder about the genius and magic of the natural world and what’s possible when we relate to nature as our mentor. In this interview, she offers an evolutionary definition of success and inspires a shift in how we view and value nature to get there. She also models how to listen deeply to the oldest organisms on Earth. With invigorating insight, Janine guides us in the restorative leadership practice of being highly intentional with our life choices as designers of the future of Life itself.

Lead With Life's Wisdom

The purpose of the Biomimicry Institute is to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design. The organization envisions a world in which people view nature not as a warehouse of goods but as a storehouse of knowledge and inspiration for sustainable solutions.

If chaos theory transformed our view of the universe, biomimicry is transforming our life on Earth. Biomimicry is innovation inspired by nature – taking advantage of evolution’s 3.8 billion years of R&D since the first bacteria. Biomimics study nature’s best ideas: photosynthesis, brain power, and shells – and adapt them for human use. They are revolutionizing how we invent, compute, heal ourselves, harness energy, repair the environment, and feed the world.
