Frances Moore Lappé is the author and co-author of 18 books including the breakthrough Diet for a Small Planet, which sold millions and is considered by the Associate Press as “the blueprint for eating with a small carbon footprint since long before the term was coined.” Named along with Thomas Jefferson, Upton Sinclair and Julia Child by Gourmet Magazine as one of the 25 people that have changed the way America eats, Frankie has received as many honorary doctorates for her leadership as she has published books.

She is the cofounder of three organizations, including the Oakland-based think tank Food First and the Small Planet Institute, which she leads with her daughter Anna Lappé. Frankie and her Anna also have cofounded the Small Planet Fund, which channels resources to democratic social movements worldwide.

She has been feature on the Today Show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Fox News’ Fox & Friends, WSJ.com, NPR, and the BBC, among other news outlets, and her work has been highlighted in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, O: The Oprah Magazine and Yes! magazine, to name a few.

Empower An Abundant World

From best-selling authors Frances Moore Lappé and Joseph Collins comes the 21st century’s definitive book on world hunger. Driven by the question, "Why hunger despite an abundance of food?" Lappé and Collins refute the myths that prevent us from addressing the root causes of hunger across the globe. World Hunger: Ten Myths draws on extensive new research to offer fresh, often startling, insights about tough questions—from climate change and population growth to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the role of U.S. foreign aid, and more.

We believe that ideas have enormous power and that humans are capable of changing failing ideas in order to turn our planet toward life. At the Small Planet Institute, we seek to identify the core, often unspoken, assumptions and forces — economic, political, and psychological — now taking our planet in a direction that as individuals none of us would choose. We disseminate this deeper understanding of root causes.
